Warmth and Music

Long Beach, CA

Overcast winter days continue here (though it’s warmer than it often is this time of the year); I’m still dreaming of warmth, heat, places where breezes featuring wisps of coolness coming off the sea break up what otherwise would be a stifling stillness … literary Alexandria, real Crete … These are my current homes, loose analogies of my true place: a Southern California that began to die sometime around when the first freeway was built: orange groves reshaped into housing tracks, strawberry fields buried under strip malls, New Greece becomes New Rome which becomes .. nothing really worth discussing–what the fuck am I still doing here …

Lately the music in my life has really been to reflect my yearning to find a better home. My Ross Daly-Kelly Thoma obsession continues. Classic rembetika is now also entering the mix. A recently bought a four-CD set called Rembetika: Baglamas, Bouzoukis, and Bravado–Greek Music from theĀ  Underground (man, that’s a lot of title!), which chronicles this musics from the first recordings in the early 20th century thru 1947. Cafe Aman, Piraeus … strange time-warp Aegean blues. I’m loving it! Somehow in the mix is also steady does of Hawaiian slack key. The dark meets the breezy, while I try and think of ways these two traditions could be combined …
